The Challenge: Two people, six bars, 12 shots.
The Players: Kerry Leonard, Metromix producer and Thomas Hardwicke, Metromix photographer and contributor.
Shot No. 3: The Thin Mint at Tonic Ultralounge, mixed by bartender Binh and tossed back by Kerry
The Ingredients: Godiva chocolate liqueur, Rumplemintz, crème de cacao, crème de menthe, half-and-half and a drizzling of chocolate syrup.
Price: around $5
What does it taste like: Truth in advertising, folks. It tasted just like the most coveted of the Girl Scout confections (you can have your Tagalongs, poseurs) only with that little something special I was missing when I first fell in love with them as a youth. That, of course, is hooch.
One sip and I was immediately transported back to the last time I binged on Thin Mint cookies. It was five years ago and I was on a cross-country road trip with, among others, my grandparents. We refueled at station in Texas where a Girl Scout was hawking her wares. We bought an obscene number of boxes and I holed up in the “bedroom” in the back of our Winnebago, shoving sleeve after sleeve in my face while being tossed around on the highways of west Texas. Come to think of it, those cookies tasted an awful lot like Binh’s shot because during my cookie binge, I was fighting a nasty hang over. Because when you’re on a cross-country road trip with your grandparents, you drink.
But I digress – big time. This was a huge pour that felt more like an after-dinner drink than a shot. It was a minty, chocolaty, refreshing inspiration. Thomas took a sip and said it best: "This is surprisingly perfect." I’m a little skittish about Rumplemintz since a harrowing experience in college, but we’ve had enough of the Kerry Story Hour today. Point being, I think I’m ready to get back on the horse. This stuff was good – try it, you’ll see.
