Pro-Valentine's: Kittens' Whiskers
If one could capture -- in a drink -- the feelings I had when I was falling in love with my fiance, the Kittens' Whiskers* would nail it. It pains me to admit that a drink called "Kittens' Whiskers" sums up any emotions I bear for my future husband (and I'm certainly not about to admit that to him), but this drink had the effervescence, the sweetness and the intoxicating addictiveness that only true love can inspire. And before you barf all over your keyboard, I'll just tell you it was delicious -- probably the best drink I've had in a long time.
Our old pal Jacob, bartender at the Mudlounge, came up with this number not long ago for a customer who wanted something light and fruity. It's a more guzzleable version of a Kir Royale, with Chambord added to champagne rather than the more traditional Creme de Cassis. In addition to this, Jacob adds a healthy dose of lime juice, garnishes it with slices of lemon and lime and a maraschino cherry and serves it on the rocks. It's super refreshing and lacks that cloying, sugary aftertaste that so many fruity drinks have. It was love in a glass. And just like my fiance, it was the last thing I thought of as I drifted off to sleep last night ... and the first thing that popped into my head when I woke this morning.
I swear I don't have a problem.
*Since this is such a new drink for Jacob and other Mudloungers, the name is still in flux. This is what another employee called it and it just might be funny enough to stick.
