The Square

Reaching the square, the tour took some time to appreciate its historical significance. The square was once the center of Springfield's business district, where City Hall, general stores and saloons once stood. It has a long history — sometimes tragic and sordid. City Hall burned down twice, lynchings took place and Wild Bill Hickok held his infamous gunfight with Confederate soldier Dave Tutt in 1865 right in the square's center. Hickok killed Tutt over a card game gone awry and the ensuing ownership of a pocket watch.
