'The Artist' takes top honors, while 'Tree of Life,' 'Moneyball' score

The New York Film Critics Circle kicked off the film awards season of 2011 by selecting acclaimed silent movie "The Artist" as the best film of the year.

"The Tree of Life" and "Moneyball" drew multiple honors including Best Actor for their shared star, Brad Pitt.

Best Picture: "The Artist"

Best Director: Michel Hazanavicius, "The Artist"

Best Actor: Brad Pitt, "Moneyball" and "The Tree of Life"

Best Actress: Meryl Streep, "The Iron Lady"

Best Supporting Actress: Jessica Chastain, "The Help," "Take Shelter" and "The Tree of Life"

Best Supporting Actor: Albert Brooks, "Drive"

Best Screenplay: Aaron Sorkin, Steven Zaillian, "Moneyball"

Best Cinematography: Emmanuel Lubezki, "The Tree of Life"

Best Non-Fiction Film: "Cave of Forgotten Dreams"

Best Foreign Language Film: "A Separation"

Best First Feature: "Margin Call"

Special Award: Filmmaker Raoul Ruiz (posthumously)
