Shrapnel on an Afghanistan battlefield changes Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey, Jr.) life forever. Critically wounded during a visit to Asia, Stark—the head of a major weapons manufacturer - awakens in a cave and learns that not only has he been taken prisoner by a terrorist group demanding he build them a missile, but that a fellow prisoner has constructed a makeshift electromagnet that keeps the shrapnel from piercing Stark’s heart. Now forever dependent on wearing this magnetic device, Stark realizes that he can also use it as the power source for an armored suit that will enable him to escape Afghanistan. Once back home, he constructs a second version of the armor, and emerges as a most unlikely super human hero.
