Expect plenty of 'Fireworks' at this year's VMAs
MTV has been smitten with Katy Perry from day one, but the 2011 Video Music Awards are shaping up to be their biggest declaration of Katy love yet. The "Firework" singer is nominated for nine VMAs, the most of any of this year's contenders, including Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Video of the Year.
Adele follows close behind Perry with seven nominations, which could make this year's VMAs an interesting study in contrasts. Will MTV celebrate Perry's pop artifice, Adele's soulful authenticity, or split the difference between the two? (We're giving the edge to Perry; this is still MTV, after all.)
Other leading nominees include Kanye West with seven, Bruno Mars with four, and Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Nicki Minaj with three apiece. Click through the gallery to see the nominees in all major categories. The VMAs will air live on Sunday, Aug. 28 on MTV; performers announced so far include Adele, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne.—Andy Hermann, Metromix
