Volcano Roll at Mijuri
This item came highly recommended from one vocal fan, Metromix reader Megan Hammond. A few months ago, she selected Mijuri's Volcano roll as her favorite dish in Springfield, so I was able to try it prior to this sushi expedition. Read more about it here, but also indulge me in this summary.
In the fine tradition of fire knocking a roll up a few ladder rungs, the Volcano roll follows suit. It's a very simple-but-tasty California roll embellished with a mysterious, bubbling pool of sauce heated by live fire. The menu cryptically describes the sauce as "surprise mild spicy." Curious translation aside, it's also a little misleading. It's not spicy at all, instead it's sweet, creamy and very unusual. It's a mayonnaise base with something else earthy, pungent, but very subtle added. A more refined palate could likely pick it out right away, but all I did was over-dunk every piece of sushi in it and then lick it off my fingers. Classy.
The fire's purpose is to gently cook the sauce, thickening it, warming it, and melding the flavors. The sensation of the cool roll meeting the warm sauce is nothing short of delightful. I just wish they had provided something additional on the side to dunk in the sauce when the roll was finished, as there was a lot left over and it seemed a shame to waste it.
