Dreaming of hometown brewed beer and scrumptious comfort food in one location in Springfield? Could it be possible? At the Springfield Brewing Company, all those dreams can come true. Located just off of Market and Walnut street downtown, this red-bricked former brewery was transformed about ten years ago into a smaller brewery with a fantastic restaurant downstairs. The Paul Mueller Company runs Brew Co. and the Mueller's namesake beers and root beers can be ordered and enjoyed by the glass or by the keg. The interior is rustic with kitsch metal signs of beer brands and exposed wooden floor beams and pipes.
The Food:
The pricing is fair and the food is delicious. Two people can grab drinks, an appetizer and two entrees for around $40. That is pretty reasonable considering the quality of service and food. They have a wide variety of options, from pizza and pastas to more gourmet items such as the Brewmaster's steak or the lemon pepper tilapia. If you are just out for a night of drinks with friends, they have plenty of tasty appetizers to snack on throughout the night. Try the creamy spinach artichoke dip or the buttermilk-battered chicken tenders. Nothing disappoints at Brew Co., unless you are staring into an empty glass or sad remains of an annihilated Brewmaster's Sampler appetizer platter. But that is unlikely, because the generous portions overflow the plate. On our visit, my companion and I had to each take home half of our entrees.
The Beer:
You go to Brew Co. for a reason, and it isn't just the tasty food that will knock your socks off. They are serious about quality and purity of their own beer always brewed on sight. In this brewhouse, they have six awesome home-brewed beers on tap, three which rotate with the availability of product and the seasons. The delicious unfiltered wheat beer and the ever-popular pale ale are favorites. Want to try them all? Try the six glass sampler to help choose your beer of the night. This fall, they have a malty Marzen beer for Oktoberfest. Whole kegs of beer and six packs of bottled beer are available as well. If you are having an enormous rootbeer float party soon, you can also bring home their homemade delicious Mueller rootbeer, made with real sweet birch bark, wintergreen, star anise and vanilla.
The Place:
Walk inside the brick building and the two story open floor plan will take your breath away for sure. The downstairs is an open air space with tables, booths, a large, well-lit bar, and the hustle of a hungry and thirsty crowd. The servers dash about taking great care of all the customers. This reviewer's server, Amy, was very kind and knowledgeable of the food and the beers. The warm, wooden interior provides the rustic sense of comfort, which is matched by the service and, of course, the food. Head upstairs past the jazz band, whose music spills down the stairs to the enjoyment of all who eat below. Upstairs, you will find a second bar, pool tables and an open patio for your pleasant weather enjoyment.
With all the homemade beer and comfort food inside, it is a good bet that you will leave the Springfield Brewing Company full, satisfied, with a doggie bag full of leftovers.
